The third annual Jack Murphy Foundation March Fitness Challenge is almost here! We are excited to continue this tradition of honoring Jack during his birthday month by focusing on fitness, the outdoors, and community.
The month-long challenge kicks off on Sunday, March 1. While participation is free, we ask that everyone sign up this year so we can track our community’s engagement. Please sign up by clicking the link to our website in our bio.
Jack was a true fitness enthusiast spending hours working out at the Boston Sports Club and UClub and watching workout videos on YouTube. Each week of the challenge is inspired by his workout style. The goals are designed to be adaptable for all fitness levels. This is a wonderful opportunity to remember Jack by pushing ourselves and staying motivated together.
New for this year:
- Strava Group: You can now join the “Jack Murphy Fitness Challenge” on the free Strava app to track our collective progress. Let’s see how many miles and workouts we can complete for Jack!
- In-Person Event: Save the date for a casual gathering to celebrate the conclusion of the challenge on Tuesday, March 31 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM in the South End of Boston, more details to follow.
Prizes:
We will award 12 prizes throughout March, with three winners selected each week. Two winners will be chosen from photo submissions sent via email or social media, and a third will be selected from the Strava group leaderboard. Winners will receive free Jack Murphy Foundation Swag of your choice!
While the primary goal of this challenge is to build a virtual community in Jack’s honor, JMF always welcomes donations. Your support helps us fund scholarship programs through our partners, NOLS and Elevate Youth. Learn more about the Jack Murphy Foundation and Our Mission and Impact through the link in our bio.
We hope you will join us!

Of course it is also great to get outside and do your favorite outdoor activity. Jack loved skiing and often spent his birthday at Mt. Sunapee with family and friends.
Today, we wish a happy heavenly birthday to our inspiration: Jack Murphy. The Jack Murphy Foundation strives to celebrate his love for adventure and nature every day, but his memory is especially strong today.
This month, we’re also embarking on the second annual Jack Murphy Foundation Fitness Challenge. Find more details in our previous posts this month.
No matter where you are today, please take a moment to move your body and get outside in Jack’s honor. Happy 25th Birthday, Jack! We miss you every day. #JackMurphyFoundation #JMFfitness2025
Here we go! Week 1 of the Jack Murphy Foundation Fitness Challenge is underway. You can see in this picture that Jack made his own pull up bar in the woods - quintessential Jack right there.
Remember:
- These activities don’t require a gym
- Take everything at your own pace
- If anything seems like too much simply consider walking somewhere instead of driving, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, etc.
- Share your progress by sending us a message or tagging us and always use the hashtag #JMFfitness2025 and you’ll be entered to win some Jack Murphy Foundation swag!
The number 25 figures prominently as Jack would have been 25 on March 5th, 2025, so we had some fun with that when designing these challenges.

Here we go again! It’s almost time for the Jack Murphy Foundation Fitness Challenge.
The JMF wants to honor and remember Jack during March, his birthday month, by focusing on fitness. We had such incredible engagement last year and look forward to turning this challenge into an annual tradition.
If you joined us last year, welcome back! If you’re new to the challenge, we’re happy to have you.
On March 1, 2025, we’re going to kick off the month-long fitness challenge, and we’re inviting family and friends to join us again. That’s you!
Jack loved the outdoors, but was also a fitness nerd, spending hours at Boston Sports Club and the UClub working out both on his own and with friends and family. He also loved to consume hours of gym videos on YouTube.
Each week will be inspired by Jack’s style of exercise. It will consist of different goals that can be adapted to all fitness levels. As the month progresses, each week will be slightly more challenging so everyone can build their strength and stamina. Remember, we’re all starting from a different place, and that’s the beauty of this challenge. It’s a chance for all of us to think of Jack and connect with him through something he loved by being motivated, getting creative, and pushing ourselves out of our comfort zones.
There will be 8 total prizes during the March fitness challenge, 2 winners selected every week. We’ll select the winners based on the submissions we get via email and social media. Winners will get the option to select one item of Jack Murphy Foundation swag for free!
Stay tuned for the workouts. We’ll post them every Saturday in March. #JMFfitness2025 #JackMurphyFoundation
Today marks two years since we lost Jack. We miss him so much and continue to draw inspiration from his kind spirit, quiet strength, and love of the outdoors. As we start another year without Jack we ask you all to pause for a moment today, enjoy nature, and acknowledge someone you love. We are proud of the progress we have made with the Jack Murphy Foundation, including scholarships granted in his name to NOLS and Elevate Youth, and the March Fitness Challenge that engaged family and friends from near and far #jackmurphyfoundation
We are happy to report that Jack’s Dad, Doug and everyone from the climbing team are back home safe and sound. Doug shared that Denali is a beautiful and unspoiled place on earth. It was an amazing challenge with a fantastic group of climbers and guides. They climbed to Camp 3 and then cached gear at 16,000ft but then waited a week for a clear weather window to try and make a summit attempt. Unfortunately they did not have any luck. It’s early in the season so cold and wind made the risks quite high. They saw first hand the amazing work of Denali Park Rangers and Denali Rescue Volunteers rescuing and sadly recovering climbers on the mountain. The team is feeling good about their decision to head down, and all fingers and toes are still attached. Here’s a few photos and a cool spot called edge of the world on Denali. Doug hopes to go back again. There are many challenging mountains around the world that highlight the beauty of this amazing planet we live on!! #jackmurphyfoundation #denalinationalpark #alpineinstitute
Doug’s Denali Expedition Team 1 has been out for 15 days and has made it above 16,000 feet. They are waiting and hoping for clearer weather before they can attempt the summit. Wish them luck on this final leg of the trip! #jackmurphyfoundation #denalinationalpark #hikingadventures
The Jack Murphy Foundation is excited to share that Jack’s Dad Doug is climbing Denali (Mt. McKinley) in May in honor and memory of Jack, an adventure they had dreamed of embarking on together. After months of training and prep Doug’s trip with the American Alpine Institute has begun. It takes a lot of gear and food, and an airplane ride to the glacier base camp, to get ready to start the trip. We’ll be posting weekly updates of the ~3 week trip so stay tuned to hear about Doug’s progress #jackmurphyfoundation #denalinationalpark #hikingadventures #jmfoundation
Happy Earth Day from Doug’s weekend hike in the Colorado mountains with Jack’s pack and poles. Jack would have loved the name Gray Wolf Mountain! Hope everyone finds the time to get out into nature soon #jackmurphyfoundation
